This is a long but fascinating infographic which presents the business case for happy employees.

It shows that happiness at work extends beyond retention and engagement, and has direct impacts on productivity.

It’s an interesting read for anyone involved in employee wellbeing.

This infographic was developed by a design company. But there are many other organisations out there studying happiness at work. The iOpener Institute for People and Performance undertook research which covered 9,000 people around the world. Their research found that employees who report being happiest at work:

  •    stay twice as long in their jobs as their least happy colleagues
  •     spend double their time at work focused on what they are paid to do
  •     take ten times less sick leave
  •     believe they are achieving their potential twice as much.

So how can you make employees happier? Provide challenging but meaningful work; trust and be trustworthy; communicate openly; offer flexible work options; recognise success; create a healthy culture; ensure there’s not too much stress; eliminate bullying; show you care about their wellbeing, and of course provide a great health & wellness program. Healthier employees are happier employees!

While the infographic is US-focused, and the stats are slightly different for Australia, the overall trends ring true.
