We often use the term “evidence based” when we talk about our WellSteps corporate wellness solution. What does this mean?
The evidence base behind WellSteps has a two-fold meaning:
First, it refers to the way the experts behind WellSteps based their design of the wellness solution on scientific evidence. It was built by international experts in behaviour change and public health who used the findings of more than 100 scientific studies to develop WellSteps.
Dr Troy Adams, one of the co-creators of WellSteps, reviewed and evaluated 17 years of evidence, and more than 100 scientific studies, to come up with the WellSteps solution.
Dr Adams and Dr Steven Aldana have spent over 40 years studying and applying the principles of health behaviour change. They call themselves “reformed academics”, who, after decades of teaching about behaviour change and public health, wanted to help organisations apply their knowledge in the real world. They have consulted with hundreds of companies to help them improve the health and productivity of their workforce.
Second, “evidence-based” refers to the way there is a large and growing body of evidence which proves that WellSteps works.
The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Population Health Management have both published studies which show that WellSteps has a direct impact on behaviour and health outcomes.
The most recent research looks at the health improvements in employees at a US school who took part in WellSteps for just one year.
Soon to be published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the research shows that after one year, participants had improvements in body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol:
– 46% of participants lowered their BMI
– 35% lowered their systolic blood pressure, 56% lowered their diastolic blood pressure
– 66% lowered their blood glucose
– 39% lowered their total cholesterol.

– this chart which shows how the number of WellSteps participants with high blood pressure was cut in half after one year. The improvement trend continued after two years.
