Healthworks for You - Festivity at work

December 2009

Ho Ho Healthworks For You!

And welcome to the last issue of Healthworks for You - for 2009 that is! Season's Greetings to you all and I hope that 2010 brings you health and happiness. Remember to stay safe over this holiday break, not just when out in the sun, but also around the home and of course, at work.

In this festive issue of Healthworks for you, we've got a few pointers on staying unstressed and healthy (but not missing out on all the goodies) in the holiday break.

We've also got a yummy twist on the traditional Christmas pudding - it's really "cool"!

So have yourself a fantastic start to 2010 and as always, please comment and let me know what you think.

Festive wishes,
Kim Harrild

Ho Ho Oh No!

Don't let festivities frazzle you!

Now that Christmas is here, are you feeling stressed and just over it all? While Christmas is traditionally a time for togetherness and celebration, in reality many people find Christmas one of the most stressful times of the year. So here's a few ways to avoid the festive meltdown!

  1. Be a wise shopper. Yeah, yeah, you've heard it before -- "Don't leave it to the last minute". Well you did. But not to worry. If you're shopping the weekend (or the day!) before Christmas, here's a couple of tips.
    1. Shop online. You need to make sure delivery will be before Christmas though! Alternatively, you can buy gift vouchers which are instantly available from some e-tailers. If the retailer is a name you recognise, you have a better chance of the transaction going smoothly.
    2. Parking a problem? If you're not keen on the online shopping, then it's off to the shops with you. If you have a horror of finding a parking space, but don't want to walk miles with a ton of shopping, perhaps get someone to drive you to the shops and arrange for them to pick you up later.
    3. Not the queues! Most people find waiting to be served a tedious experience. Getting angry and impatient won't help, although it can be hard to remember that! Take your mp3 player with you and listen to some of the more relaxing tracks you have on it while you wait. Or take a friend and indulge yourselves in a bit of people-watching while you wait. And remember that if you don't find what you want, there's always gift cards.
    4. Be Handy. If you don't want to brave the shops or fancy a more personal touch in your Christmas gifts, you can make your own presents. Try home-made gift vouchers giving your time for services round the house, or for a service you will organise for the recipient at a later date like a massage or facial. You can also make up gift baskets with items purchased from the local supermarket (and the two dollar shop!)

  2. Delegate tasks. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Most people are willing to get into the festive spirit and help you out. Remember, you need time to enjoy the season as well!

  3. Indulge yourself. Healthily, that is! While temptation is all around, it's hard to resist sneaking that extra mince pie or slice of cake. So fill yourself up with healthy snacks like fruit and carrot or celery sticks before deciding that you really, really want the extra piece of pudding. Some other healthy snacks could include frozen fruit juice (yummy iceblocks!), low fat smoothies, fruit salad or slices of melon. And try and remember to drink lots of water. It will fill you up and keep you hydrated!

Mind you, if you do take that extra piece of cake, well...it's only one piece and it is Christmas after all! Just don't do it too often!
