|Promoting Health & Safety in the Workplace
SafeWork Week is coming up, and now is the perfect time to look at how to promote health & safety in your workplace.
To assist in your preparations, the eight steps below cover creating a workplace Health and Safety event from "an interesting idea" to "wow that worked well"
- Identify the issues
What do you want to promote? Health in the workplace? Safety in the workplace? Both? Or perhaps a narrower focus, such as Manual Handling. Healthworks® has a wide range of products and services available that covers your particular focus.
- Who's your audience? What do I have to work with?
If your staff are truck drivers, then perhaps a seminar is not the right fit for you; or if you have a limited budget, a Health and Safety Expo may not be the best use of your resources. Healthworks® can tailor a health and safety solution to fit your needs and budget.
- What resources are available on the issue I'm concerned with?
If you want to educate your employees on a health or safety topic, providing them with visual material is always a popular choice. Easy to read booklets and colourful posters on a variety of specific topics can really get staff thinking. And the popular Well at Work newsletter provides a regular reminder on a wide range of health and safety topics. Healthworks® can also provide seminars, team challenges and health and safety checks. For example, if your area of concern is ergonomics, we can arrange workplace ergonomic assessments, conduct seminars on ergonomics, provide publications and posters on ergonomics and even hold an expo with an ergonomic theme that includes stalls on posture assessment and back care.
- Set your goals
Do you want to increase awareness, encourage change or strengthen attitudes towards your issue of concern? The Healthworks® suite of products can assist in all of these goals, and we can recommend which product will best help you reach your goal. For example, if education is your main objective then booklets and posters may be preferable to holding a Health Expo.
Once you have decided upon the workplace wellness activity you will provide, the next step is deciding how to roll this out to your staff. Healthworks® can assist with this, regardless of whether it's a Health Expo at your workplace or booklets and posters for training, we'll bring our experience to the table and ensure that all you need to do is enjoy the event.
While some health and safety promotions require very little lead-up promotion, it is preferable to let staff know what's coming up. It will get them thinking about health and safety, and encourage conversation. If you are holding an event like a health and safety expo, it will create a buzz of anticipation and will help ensure that your event is well-attended. Healthworks® have a range of posters and emails that accompany our health and safety events which are designed to catch attention and encourage participation.
- The Event
Rolling out your event is a big thing. Whether it's handing out booklets (or desk dropping them), pinning up posters, or holding a seminar in the board room, you want it to go smoothly. Healthworks® will assist you with the logistics of your event, from seeing that booklets are delivered on time, to ensuring that your expo runs smoothly (and taking photos if you wish it!)
With Healthworks® activities such as health checks and expos we provide a corporate summary report that aggregates staff health risks along with recommendations for future promotions in areas of concern for staff. Comments by participants regarding the event may also be included so you can gauge how well the event was received.
