Let’s cut the crap: employee wellness doesn’t have to be complicated

Employee wellness is beginning to feel ridiculously complicated, isn’t it?

The corporate wellness industry now offers more options than ever before. Employees are more informed than ever before, with higher expectations. As someone who’s worked in corporate health for more than 30 years, this is heartening to see. And yet I also feel for corporate wellness managers who are faced with so many decisions.

So I’d like to simplify things a little.

It would be irresponsible of me to give a set formula of activities that every workplace should do. Afterall, every employee group has different needs. However, there are core principles we can adhere to, and core human needs we can support. Here’s the 3 pronged formula that I have found to be successful in hundreds of businesses, large and small, white collar and blue collar and every colour in between:

Make it personal

Make it accessible

Make it useful

Personal may mean face-to-face, one-on-one consultations, or it may mean allowing employees to choose their goals and activities. Likewise, accessible may mean booking consultants in for a 6am shift, or it may mean ensuring your program is mobile-friendly.

And useful means asking a number of questions: is it feasible and achievable for most people? Is it actually what these employees need? Will it help them shift bad habits, regardless of their current health status? And, how will it help my employees, and my business?

That’s it! A short simple blog, with a short simple formula.

Over to you – what do you think? Would you add another prong to our formula for corporate wellness success? Let us know in the comments.
